As the 2017 PlayStation 4 National Premier League SA season approaches and the half way mark of pre-season is hit, Adelaide Comets Senior Coach Theo Tsiounis is pleased with his squad to date.
“For the moment things are looking good. The playing group are determined and responding well to feedback.
“In the next few weeks we have a number of trial games coming up and they will give us a better indication about where we are at.
“This year we have been working on some fundamental aspects of how we want to play.”
All three Men’s grades are taking part in a pre-season Mini Tournament, lead by Adelaide Blue Eagles at Marden Sports Complex, which kicks-off from Wednesday 18 January.
Comets will take on Adelaide Cobras, Cumberland United and West Torrens Birkalla in the initial rounds. Additionally, a trial game will be played against Adelaide Olympic on Saturday 21 January and the Senior team will travel to Melbourne the following weekend for a number of games against Victorian Premier League sides.
Pre-season is always a great time to test out new or younger players and there is one in particular that Tsiounis is excited about.
“We have a very young squad and it’s great to see some of the younger players really stepping up.
“Tom Cyganov has been one that has performed exceptionally well. At only 17 years of age he has a huge career in front of him at Adelaide Comets.”
Dutch midfielder Maarten Boddaert will touch down in Adelaide this week and Tsiounis notes that the international recruit will bring some knowledge to the side that is already very pleasing.
“One of the most pleasing aspects of this playing group is that there are no stand out players. Everyone is contributing equally and it’s looking like a very balanced team.
“Maarten is a bit older than the rest of the group at 27 years of age. He’s obviously played at a high level so I’m hoping he can bring some experience to the group.”
