Seniors Top of Table

Adelaide Comets have moved in to first place on the PlayStation 4 National Premier League SA ladder on Saturday following a 2-1 win over West Torrens Birkalla.

Andreas Wiens was responsible for both for Comets, taking his tally for the year to 8.

Coach Theo Tsiounis said the win was important.

“I think it was important to get the win, especially with a few players out and some players coming back from injury.

“It was good that they were able to step up and perform and get the result we wanted.

“It gives us a bit of breathing space. There is not much between the top and bottom team and everyone is capable of beating everyone this year, so these are the close games you want to get something out of.”

Tsiounis is pleased with his squad, but notes some standouts.

“I think all of the players have been relatively consistent in these first few weeks. I think Maarten has been a standout for me, he is reading the game, winning the ball and distributing it really well.

“Andreas is scoring consistently, creating opportunities and working hard to get the ball back. Mateusz has also been exceptional, he is winning the ball and the way he closes down spaces is exceptional.”

Focus now shifts to Round 7 and an away game at A.A. Bailey Reserve against recently promoted side Cumberland United.

“I think Cumberland have been performing reasonably well from what I have been able to see,” said Tsiounis.

“They will definitely want to prove a point and every game is a Grand Final. We have got to be at our best and make sure we perform well to get the result.

“Everyone will be trying to knock us off now.”
