U17 Cup Final
Adelaide Comets 0–2 Sturt Marion
The U17 team had prepared well for the final and was in good form leading into the final. They had beaten the top of the table team to reach the final and deserved to be there. The game started well for the Comets and the girls created a couple of opportunities. Against the run of play Sturt got a lucky break and scored the opening goal. The girls regrouped and continued to apply the pressure for the remainder of the half. The team went in at Half Time 1-0 down.
Tom regrouped the girls and message was to stay focused and to play their game.
The second half was one sided. Our girls continued to apply relentless pressure with Sturt barely getting out of their half. With the second half passing, Tom and Spiro threw another person into the attack from defence and continued to seek that equaliser . The Comets support squad was loud in its support and was urging the girls on. With approximately 10 minutes to go Sturt got a free kick outside the box and with the resulting kick scored a second against the run of play. Our girls were now up against it but did not drop their head and continued to fight for a goal. Unfortunately luck was not with them on the day and Sturt’s resilient defensive play held out to win the game 2-0.
The girls were obviously disappointed at the result but should not be disappointed with their endeavour and fight to stay in the game. It was a great display of never giving up and but for a little bit of luck could have been a different result. The Club and Coaches were very proud of them reaching the final ,their efforts during the game and they will learn a lot from their experience.
